MALOGRADO

Ellisif Hals presents a new series of drypoint collages in her first solo exhibition at ANNAELLEGALLERY.

The exhibition, titled Malogrado, consists of fictional illustrations of historical settings, depicting elevated worlds and utopias of the past that have been neglected or forgotten. By juxtaposing non-linear references to ancient worlds, she forms a 'picture world' where the story is not necessarily obvious, or even realistic, but can be fluidly interpreted. Creating double dimensional projections where layers of images form a whole, Hals builds on the idea of a world as a compound of images formed by previous historical moments.

Using drypoint prints as starting points in her work, each collage consists of repetitions of images printed in different colors. By carefully cutting out fields in the layers, she creates a parallel picture that emerges through the color differences. Her work hovers between two conflicting scenes -both the physical depth of the layers and the visual effect of depth, where the relationship between the physical real depths created by the layers versus the illusion of depth in the drawing echo the complex and idiosyncratic imagery itself.

Ellisif Hals (1981), born in Norway but lives and works in Malmö, Sweden. In 2006, Hals received a BFA from Konstfag at Oslo National Academy of Art, Norway. Previously, she has shown her work at ANNAELLEGALLERY, Stockholm; Ystad Konstmuseum, Ystad; Galleri Ping -Pong, Malmö; Galleri Thomas Wallner, Simrishamn; Galleri Arnstedt, Östra Karup; Neues Kunsthaus, Ahrenshoop among others.

I sin första separatutställning på ANNAELLEGALLERY visar Ellisif Hals en serie nya collage. 

Hals förankrar i utställningen Malogrado sina verk i historiska miljöer. Hon berör frågor om vilka förhöjda världar och utopier som historien gömmer och glömmer och om vad som finns bevarat i oss genom den kedja av dna som löper mellan oss och dåtiden. I sin idévärld skalar hon av dessa historiens onion skins ned till en förhistorisk tid där hon hittar en livsform kallad Platta former. I den bild- och tankevärld där hon rör sig är historien så som den återberättas för oss något böjligt, tolkningsbart, inte nödvändigtvis självklart eller ens riktigt. I Hals collage där dubbelprojektioner och lager av bilder bygger upp en helhet återkommer tanken om världen som en sammansatt bild av alla tidigare ögonblick.

I sina torrnålstryck består varje verk av upprepningar av bilder som tryckts i olika färger ur vilka Hals med koncentrerad noggrannhet skär ut fält. I transparensen mellan bilderna som lagts lager på lager åstadkommer hon illusionära och fysiska djup. Perspektiv är förskjutet, variationer och upprepningar framträder genom färgskillnader. På detta sätt bygger hon i sina collage en visuell helhet där öga och tanke leds in till arkitektoniska scener och djup.

Ellisif Hals (1981), är född i Norge men bor och arbetar i Malmö. 2006 fick hon sin BFA från Konstfag på Konsthögskolan i Olso.
